Bar/Bat Mitzvah translates literally as “Son/Daughter of the Commandments,” but actually means “One who is responsible for God’s Mitzvot (commandments).”
As Jewish boys and girls move into young adulthood, they have the opportunity and responsibility to fulfill various aspects of their faith. In a contemporary Synagogue, it is common for Judaism to celebrate our B’nai Mitzvah for boys (bar mitzvah) at age 13 and for girls (bat mitzvah) at age 12 or 13. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah can now lead a prayer service, be counted in a Minyan (quorum for prayer), chant from the Torah, and wear a Talit (prayer shawl) and T’filin (small letter boxes containing passages from the Torah).
B’nai Mitzvah also have the responsibility to continue their education throughout their adolescent years. They are taught to embrace the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by performing acts of loving-kindness and tzedakah (charity). Moreover, they are encouraged to seek a path of faith within their community, within their congregation, and within their souls.
Our service celebrates the study and efforts of these young men and women as they lead services, chant in Hebrew from the weekly Torah and Haftarah portions, teach us modern lessons from ancient texts, and receive the blessings of their family, friends, and synagogue community. We celebrate with the entire family of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah as we call them up to pass the Torah symbolically across the generations and for aliyot - blessings over the Torah.
